MADHUBANI ART BY MANISHA JHA. Ardhanarisvara: This resplendent canvas depicts the androgynous god form of Ardhanarisvara. The composite figure of the Hindu god Shiva along with his consort Goddess Parvati is shown here. This form represents the synthesis of the masculine and feminine energy of the universe and creation. Also known as Purusha and Prakriti, the male and the female, they are depicted together to convey their union and coexistence as the founding principle of creation and the universe. Recognisable attributes of Shiva and Parvati are ornately depicted in plain sight – the trishul, lotus, drum, rosary, the river Ganga erupting from Shiva’s top knot and others. The attention to detail is enchanting, pulling the viewer deeper into the work. While maintaining the iconographic correctness of the depiction, the rendering in the unique Madhubani idiom is not compromised. Artist Manisha Jha started painting at a young age following in the steps of her grandmother Phoolmaya Devi and mother Manju Jha. She was born in Raghopur in North Bihar and is one of the promising contemporary Madhubani artists of India.
