MONIMALA CHITRAKAR

A veteran of the patua style, Monimala Chitrakar evokes the heavenly realm of gods and goddesses on long scrolls, conjuring narratives that are often accompanied by singing and storytelling. Her works are labours of love, as she pays great attention to depicting these stories with care. The paintings are part of a Bengali oral tradition and the wandering minstrels visit houses in the villages of West Bengal, telling these stories through song and art, thus preserving and propagating their traditional narratives.
